About the Ministry
Scriptures.us gathers the theological and scriptural work of Rev. Basilius Magnus: homilies preached from the lectionary, meditative reflections on Scripture and doctrine, and sustained exegetical studies of biblical texts. Most of what appears here was first spoken to a congregation or worked out in the discipline of prayer and study before it was written for the page. It is published because the Word of God, once proclaimed, belongs to more than the assembly that first received it.
This ministry reads Scripture as the Church has read it from the beginning: as the inspired and authoritative Word of God addressed to the faithful in every age, bearing a claim upon their understanding, their conscience, and their worship. The reading draws on the original languages, the patristic commentaries, the conciliar tradition, and whatever tools of historical and literary scholarship serve the theological task. It reads with the Fathers when the Fathers illuminate, and with contemporary exegetes when precision of language or context opens what would otherwise remain closed.
The conviction that holds all of this together is simple. Reverence and intellectual rigor are not competing virtues. The heart that prays and the mind that studies are engaged in the same act of fidelity. The writing on this site proceeds from that conviction. It tends toward density and patience. It asks the reader to slow down, to follow an argument through a passage, to remain with a question that the tradition has wrestled with for centuries. This kind of reading is rare. It is also necessary.
