Reflections

A reflection is a different kind of theological speech than a homily. It is not tied to a liturgical occasion or a set of appointed readings. It arises, rather, from the slower work of sustained contemplation—from dwelling with a passage of Scripture, a patristic text, a doctrinal question, or a dimension of the life of prayer until something surfaces that asks to be written down. The reflections gathered here are more interior and more exploratory than homilies. They may circle a question without resolving it. They may follow a thread of thought into territory that a Sunday homily would not have time or occasion to enter. They seek not to instruct but to attend—to stay with what is difficult, mysterious, or inexhaustible in the theological tradition and in the encounter with the living God.
